Alright then. So I set out with the goal of drinking a Heineken party keg last Saturday. Firstly, it is 5 liters of beer which comes to about 169 us fl.oz.s; a little more that 10 pints.
I have had several of the other party kegs before but this one was special. Unlike the others which use a vent at the top, this one is pre-charged with CO2 and keeps for 30 days.(According to the label) In my case it lasted about 24 hours after purchase. It is also designed to work with the BeerTender which is a cool contraption that dispenses beer. It’s a bit pricey but you know how that goes. Give it 2 years and any will be able to afford one. see: cd player, see also: computers
For those of you who have the bias that Heines taste like skunk piss; that is no longer a valid point of view. The skunkiness comes from the green bottle which allows light to rot some of the oils that come from the variety of hops used in Heineken. Since Heineken came out with the 12 and 24oz keg cans the skunk factor has been removed and my quality of life has improved.
Overall, I really liked this thing. It poured a very nice beer for about the first 2/3 of the way through. I may be to blame for this though. Since there wasn’t enough room in my friends fridge I had to put it out on the counter. I think the warmer top and the cold beer caused it to foam a bit at the end resulting in a 2/3 full glass and more frequent trips to the kitchen. The taste was spot on. It never went flat and even after the beer was gone I purged quite a bit of CO2 out of it. I have no doubt this thing would last 2-3 weeks in the fridge after tapping.
I have only a couple of gripes which are minor but should still be mentioned. First, the angle of the tap makes it a little prone to foaming so be careful on the first pour. Second, once you tap this baby it’s tapped. When it was finished I wanted to remove the spigot and tapper but the plastic tabs that hold it down snapped off. So don’t try to remove it once you tap it otherwise you won’t be able to drink the rest of it. Third is the price. Now 20 bucks for 10 pints of Heineken is a steal in any bar, but we aren’t at the bar. Around here a 12pk of Heine is about $12-13. So $13 for 144ozs or $20 for 169ozs. What can I say? I’m broke AND cheap.
Overall, I liked it. It’s the right amount of beer to get nice and drunk. The price is reasonable and the quality is fantastic. I recommend it for picnics or parties since it does not leave you with a bunch of cans or bottles to clean up.
